100 Ambassadors. 100 Hours. 1 Million Meals.

May 26, 2026

On Tuesday, Second Harvest launched its largest-ever national awareness campaign, Race to Rescue, a collective national movement bringing together 100 ambassadors from across Canada for a shared urgent mission: raising funds to rescue enough food for 1 million meals in just 100 hours.

Chefs, musicians, athletes, farmers, journalists, scientists, entrepreneurs and changemakers across Canada are rallying their communities to take action against hunger and food waste. From Chris Hadfield and Shania Twain to Matty Matheson, Autumn Peltier and Mitch Marner, each ambassador will direct supporters to individual fundraising pages tied to a simple conversion: $1 = 5 meals.

Within the first day of the campaign, Canadians came together to raise enough for over 400,000 meals.

As the race continues, we’re looking to keep up the momentum and remind everyone that no one in our country should go hungry while good food goes to waste every day.

Why Ambassadors Are Joining the Race

For many ambassadors, joining the campaign was immediate and personal.

“I know what it feels like to go to school without breakfast. That never fully leaves you.”
- Shania Twain

“As a volunteer at the Fort York Food Bank, I have seen the direct impact of the work done by Second Harvest. When the truck pulls up, it’s all hands on deck to get the food as quickly as possible to the growing number of Torontonians who rely on food banks to feed their families. The fresh produce is always received with gratitude by the growing number of students, parents and seniors who struggle to access healthy food.”
- Pay Chen

“After more than 20 years covering local stories, I’ve seen firsthand how persistent food insecurity remains in our communities. Food is one of life’s most basic needs. In a fabulous world-class city like ours, no one should go hungry. I first learned about Second Harvest years ago while reporting on how they manage to rescue surplus food and redirect it to people who need it most.”
- Michelle Dubé

Food is not just fuel. It is a fundamental part of health, dignity and stability. As a family doctor, I see the impact of food insecurity every day. Patients come in exhausted, managing chronic conditions that are harder to control or making impossible choices between rent, medication and groceries.
- Dr. Sheila Wijayasinghe

That range of perspectives is part of what makes Race to Rescue distinct. The campaign brings together people from vastly different industries and experiences, united by a shared commitment to getting good food to the communities who need it.
