Introducing Second Harvest’s National Youth Council!

We're thrilled to introduce Second Harvest's first-ever National Youth Council, bringing together passionate young leaders from across Canada to tackle food waste. Through research, advocacy, and awareness projects, the council will engage youth in meaningful conversations on sustainability. Meet the council!

Dean Rohman (he/him), Council President is passionate about food security and sustainable food production. With experience in community outreach and youth engagement through organizations like SPEC, FreshRoots, and CityHive, Dean joined the council to deepen his understanding of food systems and amplify youth activism in food rescue efforts across Canada.

Evelyn Widner (she/her), Council Vice President brings insights from the food service sector, where she gained a deeper understanding of the socioeconomic impacts of food production and consumption during the pandemic. She joined the council eager to lead alongside young changemakers committed to action on the climate crisis, despite widespread apathy, pessimism, and harmful policies.

Naila Varawalla (she/her) brings culinary expertise from The Menus of Change Kitchen, where she focused on reducing food waste through plant-based cooking and collaborative research. She's committed to raising awareness about food waste reduction and developing innovative solutions.

Joy Amyotte (they/them) joined the council to advocate for real change amid Canada’s environmental, economic and social challenges. They value the chance to connect with young leaders nationwide and hope to build a lasting youth network beyond their time on the council.

Roufa Sadak (she/her) is driven by Sustainable Development Goal 17, focusing on addressing critical issues like food waste and food insecurity. She hopes to contribute meaningful solutions while developing leadership skills and fostering a sense of community responsibility.

Sam Kaplun (he/him) believes youth perspectives are key to tackling food waste and hunger, especially as his generation faces climate change. He aims to bring fresh ideas, make Second Harvest more accessible, and drive real progress while connecting with like-minded peers.

Shauna Kelly(she/her) joined the council to collaborate with like-minded youth and expand opportunities for learning, dialogue, and action on food waste and security. She hopes to deepen her understanding of these challenges, strengthen her leadership skills and gain experience in research, advocacy and communications.

Emma Walton (she/her)joined the council after seeing firsthand how food connects people—and how easily it is wasted—through her years in the food service industry. She is eager to learn, collaborate, and work toward a more sustainable food culture.

Salena Starling (she/her) joined the council to ensure Indigenous perspectives are included in conversations about food security and sustainability. She hopes to gain insights, build connections, and advocate for meaningful change that amplifies Indigenous voices.

Sebastian Stanescu (he/him) joined the council after being inspired by Second Harvest's work in the food security space. He looks forward to collaborating with like-minded individuals, hearing diverse perspectives, and contributing to positive change in Canada’s food system.
